From her birthday party
It's post about Natalie day! Here's a picture of the cake I made for her sixth party. It was yummy home-made cream cheese frosting and (store-bought, organic) white cake. Not bad, and the frosting was so good you didn't even really notice the cake. Nat is six is spelled in M&Ms and then there is a little bit of leaf and twigs (green and brown M&Ms for Littlefoot).
Must be...

Kitty kitty
He loves to play. He LOVES feathers. He loves to just hang out near the family (and doesn't mind the noise). Despite the fact that he jumps in places he's not supposed to jump, we love him. He lets the little girls pick him up and he never complains. There was a moment last week, actually a couple of hours, when I thought he got outside. I was very worried. Okay, I was totally freaked out and beside myself with worry. We have coyote, raccoons and a bobcat near our house. Buddy Boy is quite the perfect-sized snack.
When I was young, one of my dogs got hit by a car. It was very traumatic. I've not liked animals to be outdoor animals ever since. Today, the sneaky boy snuck out to the garage with me. Fortunately, I saw him. He's still young and can't be trusted. Did I mention he's cross-eyed and kind of, um, klutzy? I've never seen a cat fall and land on his back, but Buddy Boy managed to do it the other day. Catbert is so responsible and lovely.
A couple of other things about him, he was rescued from a garage. He and his family were shut in there with no food or water. Fortunately, animal care workers found him and his family. He was fine. He was about 7 months old when they found him in December. The woman we got him from said his birthday was 5/11/07. He and Kira get to share the day. Kira is delighted. We're going to make him a tuna cake for his first birthday (per Kira's insistence).

Progress
Our old house is starting to look like something completely different. We're excited to see it happening. We're thankful we're not the ones responsible for it anymore. Remember when we naively thought we'd be done with a remodel by 2004? They'll be lucky to be done by 2009. It's going to be lovely, but boy has it been a LONG process or what? The coolest thing is that we know the person who bought our house and we will get to see it when it's all done!

Buddy Boy
He's a sweet cat. He wakes us up in the middle of the night though. We're hoping he figures out Natalie would be a great person to sleep with rather than running around ALL NIGHT howling because the door to two bedrooms are closed. (He's a cat and closed doors drive him CRAZY!) Despite the wake-ups, he's a good boy. (Last night, I kept him in the laundry room as I NEEDED a full night of sleep.) I forgot how much energy kittens have. He's always into something! (Just like little girls.)

Funny girl
Natalie has to take something to kindergarten for sharing. The theme is something that travels by air. I asked her what she was going to bring. Without missing a beat she said, "Time Flies." Heh!
The new cat
Nat's cat may be named Buddy Boy. She's still making a decision--she's pretty sure. Since he's a cat who acts like a dog, it makes sense to call him Buddy. In general, he's doing really well. He plays, he hides under the bed, he doesn't mind too much when Natalie carries him around, and he sits and lets her read to him. He's about 10 months old. The woman who had him for foster care said his birthday was May 11th. (Kira liked that.)
Catbert and Buddy Boy met last night. Catbert tried to lick his head, the way he and Hobbes used to do things. Buddy Boy didn't respond in a "Hobbes-like manner" and it freaked Catbert out a little. This morning, we let them say hello to each other again and Catbert hissed a little. Buddy Boy is being very sweet and rolled over showing he'd be submissive, but Catbert wasn't quite ready to be friends.
