That was time flying by. Quick update and a picture or two....

1. The grant I was writing (see last post) is done.
2. Kira and I went to see Grandma F and see Asher F graduate from college!
3. The whole family (except the kitties) went to Seattle.
4. I have about a zillion great new pictures to share.



Okay... Here are some photos from when Grandma F came to visit in March. These were on her camera and I got them from her on the first trip.

'cause grants don't know it's Mother's Day

I got up before the girls did and to do some work this morning. When Tia got up, she came and sat on my lap and found the "M" key. She told me, "Every computer needs an m for Mommy."

I was making lunch for Kira and Tia and I dropped something. I said, "D'oh!"
Tia burst into song...

Doe, a deer, a female deer...

Then, Kira and I were talking about her birthday and I was telling her how little she was when I met her on May XX, 200X. She said, "Oh, I get it, Birth day ... It's your BIRTH day." She repeated this about 10 times.

This was taken after Kira's music show in Pre-Kindergarten. She was fabulous. Pictures and video someday.

situated learning

Learning...Here, Natalie is learning about fractions and calculating "the middle" of the drawer to place the drawer handle pulls in the right place. Natalie is learning in a very authentic, rich, meaningful context with the help of her father scaffolding the process so she can understand.

Nick and Natalie discussed the process of determining the center of the drawer. Nick broke the task down so that Natalie could understand all the steps. She learned about what information was needed, e.g., the length of the drawer, and the length of the handle, and then what to do with the information. He explained subtracting the length of the handle from the length of the drawer so that they could divide the remaining length into equal parts so the handle would be in the center of the drawer.

She was very engaged and focused because Nick allowed her to help drill the holes. It was definitely a real world task and it involved power tools. Learning can be fun!
