Sewing and pancaking pointe shoes
Here's part of the production for the Nutcracker. She has to sew the elastics and ribbons on her shoes and then put skin tone make up on them.
Ballet is kind of a traditional, elite endeavor and the goal of all this work is to create flesh-toned shoes that help show diversity and reflect identity. It looks good on stage, but it's a LOT of work. Hopefully shoe makers will get with the program and make more options of colors in shoes so that each dancer doesn't have to do all this work.
Beautiful flowers
I'm kind of starting backwards with this week.
This was last night. Our beautiful Iris.
She's dancing a lot in the nutcracker this year.
I got to see the dress rehearsal on Thursday and it was incredible.
I have plans to see the Nutcracker 3 more times this year.
The girl 3 from the left is the girl we went to NY with for the summer.
The girl on the left end is our carpool friend and we LOVE our carpool!
They dance 5-6 days a week now so our carpool makes it possible.

Away mission
Errr, actually the Ballet Halloween Party. Nick and I both were there but at different times. I had to go early and leave early.
In this picture, you can't tell, but Kira was an 80s aerobics instructor. Earlier, she had been a swan walking around the party being elegant. (They are doing Swan Lake this spring.)
I'm weeks behind! We just had a HUGE meeting at work in DC. If that wasn't enough, we also were writing a new grant proposal. There were other things, too but I can't remember them. More soon.

ABT (7/26) (Part 2 of NY Morning)
Here she is in front of the movie theatre by ABT studios.
And here she is annoyed with me for taking pictures.
NY morning
The morning of 7/26. Kira and I had a lovely walk to ballet from our hotel. It's almost peaceful in the city in the morning. (We had just moved hotels and weren't in the apartment so it was a new and different walk.) We got coffee and vegan tahini chocolate chip cookies.
We are on a quest to recreate these delicious cookies.
(And I am happy in the selfie... I'm just bad at them so it requires significant concentration.)
